All About Vascular Ultrasound

Ultrasound is used in many areas of the medical field for diagnosing and sometimes treating various conditions. There are a few different kinds of ultrasound each with their particular use. In a vascular ultrasound, typically a Doppler ultrasound is used to look at veins and blood flow throughout the body.

When do doctors call for a vascular ultrasound? Generally, in conditions when the flow of blood needs to be determines, as well as the condition, location and appearance of veins and arteries throughout the body.

A Doppler ultrasound uses Doppler measurements to show the flow of blood through the arteries. It can even determine the direction of the flow. A color Doppler reflects an image which it gives in color to show the direction of blood flow in various veins and arteries. This type of vascular ultrasound can help doctors recognize a number of illnesses and other problems that may be of concern.

Some of the problems that can be detected during a vascular ultrasound include such complications in the veins and arteries as tumors, blood clots and other blockages, such as plaque as well as emboli and restricted or enlarged arteries.

One of the important reasons for this type of ultrasound is to help doctors determine the cause of a stroke, as well as how severe it was. A vascular ultrasound can also help the doctor determine if the patient is a candidate for angioplasty or bypass surgeries, without have to begin the surgery in the first place. It can also determine how the body may respond to an organ transplant.

Although it may sound technical and complicated, a vascular ultrasound is really rather simple. The most common areas to be assessed are the neck, arms and legs. The procedure is much like that of a prenatal sonograph: gel is placed on the area and the transducer is moved across the skin as the sonographer finds the area to be examined. It's painless and completely noninvasive.

As a matter of fact, there is really no preparation you need to make before the vascular ultrasound (unless directed by your doctor) generally there is no need to refrain from eating or drinking. You will simply be required to move or remove any clothing or jewelry that may get in the way of the picture.

Whether you are having a regular ultrasound, or more likely a Doppler ultrasound, the procedure is the same. Depending on the type you may see a typical or graphed image, or you may see a color image, mapping out the direction of blood flow. In some cases you may also hear a pulsing sound as Doppler uses a lower sound frequency audible to humans.

Your doctor will see the images and determine the best way to treat your vascular issues with great accuracy, thanks to your vascular ultrasound.
