Portable Ultrasound Gives Access To Virtually Everyone

Ultrasound technology has been around for many decades and has been an important part of medicine with its many applications in various fields. Of course over the years the quality and abilities of these machines has improved dramatically and technology is even still constantly improving the range and capabilities of ultrasound imaging machines.

Because they have been around for a long time and improvements and advances mean that the equipment is less expensive than it once was, every hospital has numerous ultrasound machines, and many clinics and different types of doctor's offices have their own equipment and on site technicians to operate them. However, this is not true around the world, and even in rural parts of developed countries, including the United States.

There are many hospitals and doctors, even OB GYNs who have not had the opportunity to use an ultrasound machine because of financial or technical limitations. A normal ultrasound machine requires an adequate and constant energy supply and is large, heavy and expensive. However, advances are making it possible for more hospitals and clinics to use these devices.

One of the most important advances is the portable ultrasound machine. For a few years there have been portable ultrasounds that are the size of a regular laptop. These have proven invaluable in many areas.

*Emergency medicine, to be taken on site before a victim or patient can be taken to a facility

*In rural areas where a full sized machine is not available, a portable one can be transferred from site to site to benefit many different patients.

*In countries where electricity supplies are inconsistent and funds are not available for purchasing full sized machines. Visiting doctors can take along a portable ultrasound and care for patients that way.

There are many illnesses and complications in both pregnancy and other areas of physical health that cannot be properly diagnosed or treated without getting a look at them from the inside. This means having increased access to ultrasound imaging can save more lives and improve health dramatically.

Recently there have been even greater advances in ultrasound technology. Computer scientists have combined the technology in USB based ultrasound technology with smart phone technology. What results is a portable ultrasound device that can be held in the palm of your hand! One goal of this technology is to enable doctors in underdeveloped countries to learn how to use the technology. They can take ultrasound scans and send the images around the world for quick diagnosis by specialists.

With all the advancements in ultrasound technology, the uses and applications of this great device are becoming more and more diverse. With this safe method used by all types of doctors, there is no question that people around the world are benefiting from the great advances technology has made.
